Four furniture shipments, priced

All of these ran from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 so the distance is held constant and only the package changes. Prices are the full amount collected at checkout for the cheapest service returned on that box.

Flat-packed dining chair30 x 22 x 8 in25 lb$32.09

Two things stand out. The recliner is only about four times the weight of the chair carton and roughly eight and a half times the price, because it is also several times the volume. And the last row is not an error: at 150 lb the request produced zero parcel rates. SMKlog sells parcel labels only.

Why the same piece prices two different ways

Our desk quote on 2026-07-27 landed on the same 47 x 31 x 24 in, 77 lb profile as the recliner and returned the same five prices, from $275.00 on UPS Ground up to $669.23 on FedEx Ground. That is worth sitting with. Two completely different items priced identically because the carrier never sees a desk or a recliner, only a box of a certain size and mass.

Nearly four hundred dollars separates the cheapest and dearest rows for one carton on one day. On big furniture the choice of service matters more than any packing decision, and the slowest ground option is very often the only sane one.

Budgeting the pieces that will not price

A couch is a freight job

A three-seat sofa is longer than most parcel ceilings allow before you weigh it, so no parcel table on the internet can give you a real figure for one. Truck pricing is built from freight class, lane, and the conditions at each end, which is why a freight carrier quotes it per shipment rather than from a table. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.

Splitting beats upsizing

Because volume drives the parcel curve, two dense cartons usually price under one roomy one holding the same furniture. Add the carton prices together before you decide; on our test lane an 18 x 14 x 10 in carton at 18 lb was $21.77 while a single 47 x 31 x 24 in carton was $275.00.

Protection is separate from price

Coverage against loss or damage is not baked into the rate you see. Shipping protection is bought per shipment and priced on declared value, and for a piece worth more than a few hundred dollars it belongs in the budget line next to the label, not as an afterthought.

What we sell and what we do not

SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments. We now sell international parcel lanes to Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia, but not international freight; we do not sell warehousing, fulfillment or platform integrations, and we do not offer white-glove furniture delivery. Where a page like this has no honest number to give, it says so instead of estimating one.

Furniture cost questions

How much does it cost to ship a piece of furniture?

It depends entirely on the packed carton. On the Newark to Atlanta lane an 18 x 14 x 10 in table parts carton at 18 lb quoted $21.77 on 2026-07-27, a 30 x 22 x 8 in chair carton at 25 lb quoted $32.09 on 2026-07-28, and a 47 x 31 x 24 in recliner at 77 lb quoted $275.00 on 2026-07-27.

How much does it cost to ship a couch?

No parcel carrier will price one, so there is no honest table figure to give. A three-seat sofa exceeds the parcel size ceilings before weight is even considered, and it has to be quoted as freight, where class, lane and the conditions at each end set the number.

Why is shipping a recliner so expensive?

Because it is large as well as heavy. The 47 x 31 x 24 in carton at 77 lb returned five prices on 2026-07-27, from $275.00 with UPS Ground up to $669.23 with FedEx Ground, and the same profile came back for our desk quote, which tells you the carrier is pricing the box rather than the furniture.

Is it cheaper to disassemble furniture before shipping?

Nearly always. Taking legs and arms off reduces both the packed height and the combined inches, and two dense cartons typically price below one oversize one. On our lane the smallest furniture carton was $21.77 against $275.00 for the largest.
