The dollar figures on this page cover the gear box only. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
What we could price honestly: the gear
A two-piece paddle broken down with a life vest in the same long box is a legitimate parcel, so we quoted it live from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303.
What we typed
Kayak paddle and life vest in one box
The paddle splits into halves around 51 inches, which keeps the box inside parcel length limits.
Packed box it returned
51.2 × 8.7 × 6.7 in
130 × 22 × 17 cm
About 5.5 lb (2.5 kg) for both items with padding.

The long box drives this price far more than the featherweight contents do.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Estimated transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $30.32 | 4-5 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $54.41 | 3-4 business days |
| UPS | Ground Saver | $55.55 | about 4 business days |
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $55.94 | 6-7 business days |
| UPS | 3 Day Select | $77.82 | 3-4 business days |
A gap that wide between first and last row for the same box is what oversize-length pricing looks like. FedEx Ground Economy happened to tolerate the 51-inch dimension best that day.
Splitting the shipment well
Break the paddle first
Two-piece paddles halve their own length, which is the entire reason the gear box stays parcel-legal. Tape the ferrule joint faces so grit stays out.
Vest as padding
A life vest is packing material that happens to be cargo. Wrap it around the paddle halves and both items protect each other for zero added bulk.
Hull measured separately
The hull goes by freight, so a freight carrier will want its length, beam and weight, and photos of the ends help it choose a rack or pallet. SMKlog does not arrange that move.
Kayak questions without the runaround
Can I ship a kayak through a parcel carrier?
Not the hull. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
Who ships the hull, then?
A freight carrier or a boat transporter, booked directly with them. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
How should a hull be prepped for freight?
Empty every hatch, strap the seat down, pad the bow and stern with foam or blankets, and wrap the cockpit rim. Rigid points at the ends take the worst knocks on a pallet.
What about an inflatable kayak?
Deflated and folded, it becomes an ordinary box and skips the freight question entirely. Type its packed size into the calculator and it prices like any other parcel.
