A cheap label for a parcel Australia will destroy at the border is the most expensive shipment on this page.
Said plainly: checkout now sells this lane
Checkout here sells Australia-bound parcel labels online: live carrier rates (UPS, FedEx, and DHL Express when the lane returns it), a customs declaration finished before payment, a commercial-invoice pack emailed after purchase, and duty resting with the recipient under DDU. Those figures move daily, so every price below carries the date it was captured rather than standing as a rate card. Around them sits the frame that decides the number wherever you end up buying, because the frame is public, dated, and rarely read before the box is packed. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
Six parcels to Sydney, priced on the day
Twenty-two quotes came back across six parcels on one lane, Berkeley Heights, New Jersey to Sydney 2000. These are not one box getting steadily heavier: the 0.4 kg row is a flat document mailer 32 cm by 24 cm by 1 cm, and the 5.5 kg row is a 40 cm carton with a stand mixer in it. Each row therefore names its own box. Prices are what checkout charged all in, postage included, before anything Australia levies on arrival.

Two kinds of row are missing on purpose. Some of these quotes also returned a consolidated export program that carries no service name the carrier itself publishes, and one UPS line came back under a code that could not be matched to a retail service. Neither can be named honestly on a public page, so neither is priced here. At 0.4 kg, 0.6 kg and 2 kg those unnamed lines undercut the cheapest row above, which is why nothing on this page is called the lowest price on the lane.
Three things the ladder shows that a single quote would not. UPS Worldwide Economy came back at $40.05 for both the 0.6 kg and the 0.9 kg parcel, so the lane has a floor that a lighter box does not get under. The cheapest of the three carriers moves with weight rather than staying put: UPS holds it from 0.6 kg through 2 kg, then at 5.5 kg FedEx International Connect Plus takes it at $116.63 against $126.92. And DHL Express Worldwide quoted 3 business days at every weight while being the dearest row at five of the six.
The cliff at four pounds
The single most decision-relevant number for Australia is a ceiling, not a rate. The lightweight postal product stops at 4 lbs; everything above it moves to a parcel product with a much higher floor. Pack a 3 lb 12 oz box and a 4 lb 4 oz box and you have bought two different products, not two weight increments of one.
| Product | Weight ceiling to Australia | Size ceiling to Australia | Customs paperwork |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-Class Package International Service | 4 lbs | Small packet limits, per IMM 251.22 and 251.23 | PS Form 2976 |
| Priority Mail International | 66 lbs | 42 in length; 97 in length and girth combined | PS Form 2976-A inside PS Form 2976-E |
| Priority Mail Express International | 66 lbs | 36 in length; 97 in length and girth combined | PS Form 2976-B inside PS Form 2976-E |
| First-Class Mail International | 3.5 oz for letters and postcards, 15.994 oz for large envelopes | Letter, postcard and flat limits, per IMM 241.212, 241.221 and 241.232 | None, unless otherwise required |
| “Global Express Guaranteed” | Listed as suspended to Australia as of September 29, 2024 | Not applicable while suspended | Not applicable while suspended |
The suspension in the last row is the change most likely to catch out a seller working from an old checklist: the fastest postal option to Australia has not been available for well over a year. Above 66 lbs the postal network stops entirely and the shipment becomes air freight booked through a forwarder, which is a different transaction with a different set of documents.
Three more numbers come off the Priority Mail International product page itself, read 2026-09-01. The product's general ceiling is 70 lbs, but a country listing may sit lower and Australia's does at 66 lbs, so the country number is the one that governs. The flat rate route carries its own caps that catch people mid-pack: envelopes and small boxes take up to 4 lbs, medium and large boxes up to 20 lbs. And USPS puts the window at 6-10 business days for many major markets, adding that the actual number of days may vary based on origin, destination and customs delays.
The size column is the part of this lane that catches out people who ship elsewhere, and it is easy to miss because the scale says nothing about it. Australia's listing caps Priority Mail International at 42 inches of length and Priority Mail Express International at 36, and holds both to 97 inches of length and girth combined. Those are tighter than the same listing allows the suspended express product, which is written down at 46 inches of length and 108 of length and girth. A long, light shipment such as a rolled rug, a tripod or a fishing rod can therefore fail on the tape measure while passing comfortably on weight.
What the Postal Service charges on the same lane
Australia is assigned Price Group 12 for weight-based international postage and Price Group 6 for flat-rate containers. Those two numbers are the whole of USPS pricing to Australia: find the group, then read the column. Both assignments were confirmed against the country price groups table and the Australia listing on 2026-09-01, and the figures below come from Notice 123 effective July 12, 2026.
| Weight not over | First-Class Package International Service | Priority Mail International | Priority Mail Express International |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | 24.80 USD | Table starts at 1 lb | 92.25 USD |
| 1 lb | 41.25 USD | 70.65 USD | 95.40 USD |
| 2 lb | 46.05 USD | 77.95 USD | 100.90 USD |
| 3 lb | 65.25 USD | 86.80 USD | 109.80 USD |
| 4 lb | 79.10 USD | 96.80 USD | 118.75 USD |
| 5 lb | Over the 4 lbs ceiling | 106.65 USD | 127.70 USD |
| 10 lb | — | 166.15 USD | 186.80 USD |
| 20 lb | — | 258.80 USD | 284.05 USD |
| 66 lb | — | 686.50 USD | 757.50 USD |
The bottom row is where the two Postal Service sources agree without being asked to. Notice 123 prints a Group 12 price at 66 lb and leaves 67 lb blank, which is the same 66 lb ceiling the Australia country listing states in words, reached from the other direction.
| Container | Weight ceiling | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Priority Mail International Flat Rate Envelope | 4 lbs | 53.00 USD |
| Priority Mail International Small Flat Rate Box | 4 lbs | 54.75 USD |
| Priority Mail International Large Video Flat Rate Box | 4 lbs | 54.75 USD |
| Priority Mail International Medium Flat Rate Box | 20 lbs | 112.70 USD |
| Priority Mail International Large Flat Rate Box | 20 lbs | 139.55 USD |
| Priority Mail Express International Flat Rate Envelope | 4 lbs | 89.20 USD |
The second table is the one worth reading before taping a box shut. A 20 lb parcel priced by weight on Priority Mail International to Group 12 is 258.80 USD. The Medium Flat Rate Box holds 20 lb and costs 112.70 USD. Nothing about the shipment changes except the container it is packed in, and a fixed box sidesteps the length limits above by construction.
Set against the captured rows earlier on this page, the postal route wins at the bottom of the range and loses at the top. A 14 oz packet sits in the 9 to 16 oz band at 41.25 USD, under the $45.30 that was the cheapest named quote for the 0.4 kg mailer. A 12.1 lb parcel takes the 13 lb Priority Mail International line at 192.65 USD, against $116.63 for the 5.5 kg carton. Neither set of prices includes what Australia charges on arrival: duty and Goods and Services Tax fall to the recipient on this lane, and the declared value that switches them on is AUD 1,000, worked through against Border Force's own pages in our guide to Australia's customs fees.
What Australia refuses at the border
Australia's import controls are built around biosecurity, and the prohibition list in the country listing shows it. A parcel holding any of the following is not a cheap parcel; it is a destroyed parcel with the postage already paid. Condensed from the prohibitions section, read 2026-09-01:
- Most food, plant and animal products, along with untreated wood and used bedding
- Coins, currency, securities payable to bearer, traveler's checks, precious metals and precious stones, except within the jewelry exception below
- Antiquities, art, fossils, historical documents, numismatic material, specimens of flora and fauna and other cultural heritage objects significant to a nation's identity
- Replica firearms, firearm silencers, signal jammers and dog collars designed to injure animals
- Tobacco products other than cigars, goods bearing the Anzac name, prison-produced goods and seditious literature
- Radioactive materials, perishable infectious biological substances and fruit cartons
One entry deserves its own line because it moves with policy rather than with law. The listing states that raw forms of beans, grains, nuts, rice and seeds are temporarily banned by the government of Australia, with narrow exceptions. Anything in that family is worth re-checking against the listing on the day you mail rather than trusting a page you read months ago.
Three restrictions that change how, not whether
Jewelry
Permitted only when sent as an insured parcel using Priority Mail International service. A two-ounce gold chain is therefore shut out of the cheapest lightweight product regardless of what it weighs, and that rule, not the scale, sets its postage.
Fish and fish parts
Admissible only with an import permit issued by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority. The permit is the recipient's side of the transaction, and it has to exist before the parcel arrives, not after.
Seeds that do qualify
Need a phytosanitary certificate from the Australian Department of Agriculture. Without it the parcel is treated as part of the temporary ban above.
There is also a line in the observations section that catches commercial senders: duty may be levied on catalogs, price lists, circulars and all advertising introduced into Australia through the mail. A promotional insert in an otherwise ordinary parcel can create a duty event, which is a good reason to keep marketing material out of an international box entirely.
Getting to a real number
Once the product is settled by weight and admissibility, the price comes from the postal or courier rate table for the destination group Australia sits in, on the day you buy. One thing moves it that a domestic shipper never meets: the customs declaration has to carry an honest description and an honest value, because that value is what any duty or tax at the border is assessed against. A parcel declared with a vague description and a low value is the standard way to turn a two-week delivery into a month-long inquiry.
Our page on USPS international shipping covers the three postal products in general terms with the starting prices the Postal Service publishes, and the customs form guide walks through filling in the declarations named in the table above. The calculator now prices the Australian lane itself live, declaration included, alongside any United States leg.

Australia lane: prices, transit and limits
How much does it cost to ship a box from the US to Australia?
On 2026-09-02 a 12 x 10 x 8 in box weighing 4.4 lb went from New Jersey to Sydney for $78.60 all-in with UPS Worldwide Economy in 8 business days; a 16 x 12 x 10 in box at 11 lb was $94.49 with FedEx International Connect Plus, and a 20 x 16 x 12 in box at 22 lb was $153.93 with FedEx International Connect Plus. Those are whole checkout amounts with the customs declaration included, and duty and GST are charged to the recipient only above AUD 1,000 of declared value.
What decides the price of a parcel to Australia?
Which product can legally carry the box, and what the box weighs inside that product's ceiling. Postal service to Australia stops at 4 lbs on First-Class Package International Service and at 66 lbs on both Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International, so the weight decides the product long before anyone quotes a figure.
What is the heaviest parcel that can be mailed to Australia?
66 lbs, on Priority Mail International or Priority Mail Express International, per the USPS country listing for Australia read on 2026-09-01. Anything heavier moves as air freight through a forwarder rather than through the mail.
Which customs form does an Australian parcel need?
PS Form 2976 for First-Class Package International Service, PS Form 2976-A inside PS Form 2976-E for Priority Mail International, and PS Form 2976-B inside PS Form 2976-E for Priority Mail Express International.
Can I send food or seeds to Australia?
Almost never. Most food, plant and animal products are prohibited outright, and raw forms of beans, grains, nuts, rice and seeds are temporarily banned by the government of Australia. Seeds that do qualify need a phytosanitary certificate from the Australian Department of Agriculture.
Can jewelry be mailed to Australia?
Only one way. The country listing permits jewelry only when it is sent as an insured parcel using Priority Mail International service, which rules out the cheaper lightweight product no matter how small the piece is.
How much does it cost to ship a parcel from the US to Australia?
On quotes captured 2026-08-31 and 2026-09-01 from New Jersey to Sydney, a 0.9 kg boxed mug came back at $40.05 on UPS Worldwide Economy and $59.09 on DHL Express Worldwide, while a 5.5 kg carton came back at $116.63 on FedEx International Connect Plus. Price tracks weight, and which carrier is cheapest changes as the box gets heavier rather than staying fixed.
Is USPS cheaper than a courier for a parcel to Australia?
At the light end, yes. Australia draws Price Group 12 in USPS Notice 123, where a 9 to 16 oz packet on First-Class Package International Service is 41.25 USD, under the $45.30 that was the cheapest named courier quote captured for a 0.4 kg mailer. By 12 lb the comparison reverses: Priority Mail International is 192.65 USD at the 13 lb line, against $116.63 captured for a 5.5 kg carton.
How long does a parcel from the US to Australia take?
Of the quotes captured on this lane, DHL Express Worldwide returned 3 business days at every weight, FedEx International Priority Express returned 4 business days on a 0.9 kg box and 6 business days on a 1.4 kg box, and UPS Worldwide Economy returned 8 business days throughout. Some rates came back carrying no window at all, and those are left blank here rather than filled in.
What is the longest parcel USPS will carry to Australia?
42 inches on Priority Mail International and 36 inches on Priority Mail Express International, with both also held to 97 inches of length and girth combined. Those limits come from the USPS country listing for Australia, read 2026-09-01, and they are tighter than the length the same listing allows on other products.
