One shirt bagged and three shirts boxed, priced on the same lane the same day.
One shirt in a poly mailer, 2026-08-11
A cotton t-shirt folded flat sits comfortably in a 12 by 9 in mailer at 0.7 lb once the mailer, tissue and tape are on the scale. That parcel drew five services on our Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 lane.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Quoted transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $10.06 | 6-7 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $10.69 | 2-3 business days |
| UPS | 3 Day Select | $15.13 | 2-3 business days |
| UPS | 2nd Day Air | $15.38 | 2-3 business days |
| FedEx | Express Saver | $19.23 | 2-3 business days |
Note the second row. UPS Ground came back with a 2-3 business day window for 63 cents more than the cheapest slow lane. On a single-shirt sale, a marketplace on-time rating is worth those coins; on a shipment to a friend, the slow row is fine.
Three shirts in a small box, same day, same lane
Fold three tees flat, stack, and drop into a small mailer box that measures 12 by 9 by 4 in at 2 lb packed. The rate menu shuffles as soon as USPS Ground Advantage becomes eligible on the heavier bundle.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Quoted transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $9.48 | 9-10 business days |
| UPS | Ground Saver | $10.52 | about 4 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $11.07 | 2-3 business days |
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $12.42 | 6-7 business days |
| UPS | 3 Day Select | $16.37 | 2-3 business days |
The bundle saves the postage on two extra labels for the price of a wider box, and each incremental shirt costs almost nothing. Above four shirts a slightly larger box begins to earn its keep because a 3 to 5 lb parcel still rides the same short zone at a single-digit uplift.
How to fold so a shirt arrives worth wearing
Fold, then divide
Lay the shirt face down, fold the sleeves back parallel to the side seams, then fold in thirds from the hem. That fold pattern hides the shoulder line inside the parcel and stops a hard crease on the placket.
One sheet of tissue in the shoulder
A single tissue sheet along the shoulder crease absorbs the shift a mailer takes in transit and gives the buyer something to unwrap. A plastic clip is a mistake, as it prints through jersey on a warm day.
Roll is for tees only
Rolls suit unstructured cotton tees, singlets and knits. Anything with a collar or a placket wrinkles worse rolled than folded, so keep dress shirts flat.
Moisture, resale and the inner bag
Poly mailers shed rain well and shrug off a light warehouse spray. Where they lose is condensation. A parcel warms on a delivery truck after a cold night, and moisture forms on the inside of the bag; light-color prints and reactive dyes can bleed against that. On anything with color that could migrate, or a print that mattered when the sale was made, add a clear inner bag before the outer mailer and tape the mouth. The extra sixty seconds costs a penny and rules out the worst return case.
On the price side, weight is the switch that matters below 2 lb. Every quarter pound above the starting scale line nudges the row a step, and a thick mailer with a printed liner has been enough to move a shirt across it on our tests. Weigh the fully dressed parcel, not the shirt.
Where to price your own package
Type the item and the two ZIPs and the full rate menu comes back for that parcel, on both mailer and box, so the two-row question above becomes one answer. The tables above are 2026-08-11 quotes on one lane; a different zone or a heavier item redraws them, and the calculator does that with nothing to sign up for.
Shipping-shirts questions
What is the cheapest way to ship a single shirt?
A folded shirt in a poly mailer. On 2026-08-11 our Newark to Atlanta test came back at $10.06 with FedEx Ground Economy for a 0.7 lb mailer, ahead of the two-day rows a dollar or so above it.
Do shirts wrinkle in the mail?
A fold and a single tissue sheet in the shoulder crease usually beats any wrinkle. Rolls are the worst pattern for anything with a placket; use them only on unstructured tees and press seams inward.
Poly mailer or box for a bundle?
Three shirts fit a small box comfortably at about 2 lb. On the same lane the same day, the box quoted $9.48 with USPS Ground Advantage against $10.52 on UPS Ground Saver, so pick the service that fits the timeline; both are near enough that speed decides.
Does moisture ever ruin a shirt in a poly bag?
Poly mailers shed rain well enough, but they trap depot condensation on cold days. For anything with color that can migrate, a clear inner bag is worth its weight.
Should I insure a shirt shipment?
For a $20 tee, no. For a limited run, a signed jersey or a $200 dress shirt, add declared-value protection at checkout for the resale price. USPS Ground Advantage and the private carriers each build in modest included coverage; the box tick is only for what runs beyond it.
