The product, the price, the label, the door. Everything else is packing tape.
Step one: which FedEx product takes the box?
FedEx sells three families to a domestic shipper, and they part company on weight before they part company on speed. Figures below are quoted from fedex.com/en-us/shipping/ground.html, fedex.com/en-us/shipping/ground/economy.html and fedex.com/en-us/shipping/express.html, all read 2026-07-28.
| Family | Published ceiling | Published timing | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx Ground Economy | 70 lbs., 130 in length plus girth. FedEx names 1 to 10 lbs. as the ideal weight | Typically 2 to 7 business days | Light, unhurried, no dated promise attached |
| FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery | 150 lbs., 108 in in length, 165 in in length plus girth | Ground runs Monday to Friday; Home Delivery runs every day of the week | Anything heavy, and residential addresses at the weekend |
| FedEx Express | Not published on the page read | Express Saver at 3 days Monday to Friday, 2Day and 2Day A.M. within two business days, then Standard, Priority and First Overnight for the next business day | Anything that has to land on a named day |
Home Delivery is the detail most people miss. It is the residential arm of the ground network, it works weekends, and it carries a residential surcharge per package that FedEx publishes on the same page. If the destination is a house, that surcharge is already inside the price you see at checkout here, so compare totals rather than base rates.
People also ask whether FedEx charges by weight or by size, and the carrier's own answer is both: each shipment is billed on the dimensional weight or the actual weight of the package, whichever is greater, with dimensional weight worked out as length times width times height in inches divided by 139 (fedex.com/en-us/shipping/packaging/what-is-dimensional-weight.html, read 2026-08-12). A light box that measures big is priced as big, so tape-measure the carton before trusting the scale.
Step two: get a real FedEx number before you commit
Four boxes went through the SMKlog calculator on 2026-07-28 from Berkeley Heights, NJ to two destinations. Each quote returned five rates across the carriers, and these are the FedEx rows that appeared among them. Every figure is the complete amount collected at checkout, not a base rate.
| Box | Destination | FedEx product | All-in price | Estimate given |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13 x 8 x 5 in, 3 lb | Atlanta, GA | FedEx Ground Economy | $12.42 | 6-7 business days |
| 16 x 12 x 10 in, 15 lb | Atlanta, GA | FedEx Ground Economy | $19.63 | 6-7 business days |
| 20 x 16 x 14 in, 40 lb | Atlanta, GA | FedEx Ground Economy | $47.92 | 6-7 business days |
| 20 x 16 x 14 in, 40 lb | Atlanta, GA | FedEx Ground | $53.64 | 5-6 business days |
| 16 x 12 x 10 in, 15 lb | Los Angeles, CA | FedEx Ground Economy | $28.50 | 7-8 business days |
| 16 x 12 x 10 in, 15 lb | Los Angeles, CA | FedEx Ground | $42.39 | 6-7 business days |
One result in that run surprised us and one did not. The economy product held its lead all the way up to 40 lb, sitting under FedEx Ground on the heavy carton and further under it coast to coast, which is unusual: on most carriers the economy tier flips expensive as boxes get heavy. And the transit estimates were long. A six or seven day window from New Jersey to Georgia is the price of the cheapest purple option, so anything with a deadline belongs on FedEx Ground or in the Express family instead.
Step three: check FedEx against the other two
Loyalty to a carrier is expensive. Here is the same 15 lb carton on the same morning, with every rate the calculator returned for the Atlanta lane, so the FedEx row can be judged against its neighbours rather than on its own.
| Carrier and product | All-in price | Estimate given |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx Ground Economy | $19.63 | 6-7 business days |
| UPS Ground Saver | $19.78 | 4 business days estimated |
| USPS Ground Advantage | $21.50 | 5-6 business days |
| UPS Ground | $23.54 | 2-3 business days |
| UPS 3 Day Select | $31.29 | 3-4 business days |
FedEx won the row by fifteen cents and lost the week by three days. That is the trade worth naming out loud before you pick: the top of this table is separated by less than two dollars while the estimates span from two days to seven, so on this lane the sensible read is to buy speed for pocket change rather than to chase the lowest line.
Step four: buy the label without opening an account
- Describe the item, or type the box. Naming what is inside is enough to get a packed size and weight estimated; if you have already measured, enter the numbers and skip the estimate.
- Read the FedEx rows against the rest. Every carrier that serves the lane appears on one screen with its own window, which is the only way the choice above is made on evidence rather than habit.
- Check out as a guest. Recipient details and card take a couple of minutes on a Stripe page. No fedex.com credentials exist anywhere in the flow, and the label arrives print-ready with tracking already attached.
- Add declared-value protection if the contents warrant it. It is offered during checkout where the carrier supports it for the route, and it is priced against what you declare rather than what you paid.
- Tape the label flat on the largest face. One barcode visible, old labels removed or covered. A scanner that cannot read the box hands it to a human, and that is where days disappear.
Step five: the hand-off, and where FedEx differs from UPS
This is the step people get wrong, because the two brown-and-purple networks put their self-service limits in different places. Both sets of figures below come from the carriers' own pages, read 2026-07-28.
| Question | FedEx | UPS |
|---|---|---|
| Largest box an unattended drop box takes | Under 20 x 12 x 6 in | Up to 16 x 13 x 3 in |
| Staffed places listed | FedEx Office, FedEx Ship Center, FedEx Authorized ShipCenter, Walgreens, Dollar General and grocery locations | Counters and stores, plus the same drop box network |
| Weight a retail drop-off should stay under | 55 pounds | Not stated on the location page read |
| Charge for handing it over | None, in the carrier's own words | Not stated on the location page read |
The practical gap is depth. A FedEx drop box swallows a six-inch-deep carton where a UPS one stops at three, which covers most shoe boxes and a fair number of small appliances. Above 55 pounds, or past the drop box envelope, a staffed FedEx counter is the answer at either brand, and a prelabeled parcel needs nothing done to it there beyond a scan.
FedEx shipping questions
Can I ship with FedEx without a FedEx account?
Yes. A label bought through a platform carries the same barcode and tracking as one bought on fedex.com, and no carrier login appears anywhere in the flow. Pay as a guest, print, tape it on, hand it over.
Which FedEx service should I choose?
Under 70 lb with time to spare, FedEx Ground Economy usually posts the lowest FedEx number. Above 70 lb, or when the estimate needs to be tighter, FedEx Ground carries it. For a dated arrival, the Express family runs from Express Saver at three business days up to First Overnight.
How big can a FedEx package be?
FedEx publishes 150 lbs., 108 in in length and 165 in in length plus girth for FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery, and 70 lbs. with 130 in of length plus girth for FedEx Ground Economy. Both figures were read on fedex.com on 2026-07-28.
Where can I drop off a FedEx package?
FedEx lists FedEx Office, FedEx Ship Center, FedEx Authorized ShipCenter, FedEx Drop Box, Walgreens, Dollar General and grocery locations, with no extra charge for dropping off. A drop box takes packages under 20 by 12 by 6 in; staffed counters take up to 55 pounds.
Is FedEx cheaper than UPS or USPS?
Sometimes, and it swings by box. On the 15 lb carton quoted here from New Jersey to Atlanta on 2026-07-28, FedEx Ground Economy came back at $19.63 against $21.50 for USPS Ground Advantage and $23.54 for UPS Ground. Move the same box west and the ranking changes again.
Does FedEx ship by weight or by size?
Both, through one rule: FedEx bills each shipment on the greater of its actual weight and its dimensional weight, and dimensional weight is length times width times height in inches divided by 139. Read on fedex.com on 2026-08-12. A pillow in a wardrobe box is priced as the box, not the pillow.
