Frames, boxed properly

The picture frame shipping box, chosen and packed

A frame travels well in exactly one configuration: flat, cornered, sandwiched between stiff sheets, inside a carton a few inches bigger than itself. This page covers where those cartons come from, the sizing rule that always works, and what our 16 x 20 test frame cost across five live services.

The carton dimensions in our quote already include room for corner caps and foam, so the price reflects the parcel you will actually hand over.

One framed print, five prices

We described a 16 x 20 inch framed picture with glass in a frame shipping box and asked for Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 on 2026-07-27. The estimator sized the parcel at 24 × 20 × 4 in and 7.7 lb, and these services came back.

Note what the lineup rewards: patience, mildly. The gap between the slowest and fastest rows stays inside ten dollars, and the two cheapest services both run on ordinary ground networks. Frames larger than about 30 inches on a side start pricing like furniture, since a flat parcel grows in two directions with every size step.

The plus-four rule

Frame height plus four, width plus four, depth of three to four inches. That clearance fits a corner cap on each miter, a foam or board sheet on each face, and a finger of fill everywhere else. Tighter than that and the armor gets left out; looser and the frame commutes inside its own box.

Three sources of frame cartons

Telescoping picture boxes from art suppliers adjust across a range of sizes. Moving stores sell mirror-picture kits, four L-shaped shells that interlock around the piece. And any large flat carton, cut down and re-taped along fresh seams, does the job for a one-off shipment.

Glazing gets its own ritual

Low-tack tape in a lattice across the glass keeps any break from migrating, a habit our mirror guide explains at full length. Acrylic glazing skips the tape but scratches easily, so it wants a slip sheet of paper before anything else touches it.

Frame box questions

What size box does a framed picture need?

Add roughly four inches to the frame's height and width and allow three to four inches of depth. Our 16 x 20 frame packed out to a 24 x 20 x 4 inch carton at 7.7 lb once corner protectors, foam and rigid sheets went in.

Where do picture frame boxes come from?

Art-supply shops and box retailers sell telescoping frame cartons that expand to fit, movers sell mirror-and-picture kits in four interlocking pieces, and a competent substitute can be cut down from any large flat box with fresh tape on every seam.

Do corner protectors actually matter?

More than any other single supply. Frames almost always land on a corner, where all the energy concentrates into the miter joint, and a foam or cardboard cap spreads that hit along both rails. Four caps cost pocket change and prevent the most common break.

What does shipping a boxed frame cost?

Our 16 x 20 framed print with glass, packed to 24 x 20 x 4 inches, quoted $20.73 to $28.88 across five live services on 2026-07-27, Newark to Atlanta, with UPS Ground Saver cheapest. Larger frames climb quickly because both footprint dimensions grow at once.
