One company sells software and charges for it. The other gives the software away and earns from the carriers. Everything downstream follows from that choice.
What each company publishes about itself
Both columns were read off the vendors' own sites on 2026-07-28. Nothing here is inferred, and nothing either company has not said in public appears in the table.
| Axis | Pirate Ship | ShipStation |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring charge | None stated: no monthly fees, payment fees or hidden costs | Starter from $14.99/mo, Standard from $29.99/mo, Premium from $349.99/mo |
| How volume affects it | Not tied to a published tier ladder | Tiers run 50 to 100,000 shipments a month; Starter reaches $174.99/mo at 5,000 |
| Stated revenue source | Paid by the carriers rather than the shipper | Paid by the subscriber |
| Getting in | Free account, no credit card required | 30-day trial, no credit card required |
| Carriers presented | USPS and UPS, including Commercial Pricing and Priority Mail Cubic | Multi-carrier, with users on 3, 10 or 15 seats by plan |
| Operations features | Not the pitch on their homepage | Automation rules, API on Standard, inventory and warehouse on Premium |
Read the last two rows together and the split is obvious. One product is a cheap door to carrier postage. The other is a workflow engine you attach to a business that already has orders flowing through it. A shipper picking between them is really deciding whether the bottleneck is postage price or handling time.
A neutral third number
Neither vendor's rates are ours to publish, so instead here is an independent reference point: a mid-weight carton priced through our own calculator on the same date, so you have something concrete to hold both quotes against.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Transit window returned |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS | Ground Saver | $20.50 | None returned |
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $20.98 | 6-7 business days |
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $22.62 | 8-9 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $23.70 | 2-3 business days |
| FedEx | Ground | $29.72 | 5-6 business days |
Use that column as a sanity check rather than a benchmark. If a quote you get anywhere lands wildly outside this band for a comparable box on a comparable lane, something in the dimensions or the service level is different from what you think it is.
Where SMKlog sits in this picture
We are the third column and a narrow one. It seems fairer to describe the boundary than to argue we belong in the middle of somebody else's head-to-head.
- No monthly charge to buy a single label, and no plan starts when you do.
- First three quotes need no account; the Free plan then allows 15 quotes a month, with paid tiers on the pricing page.
- USPS, UPS and FedEx quoted together on US domestic parcels, plus international lanes to Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia.
- No automation rules, no order import, no inventory, no API in the free tier, and no warehouse features. If you need those, ShipStation is built for it and we are not.
- Our charge sits inside the rate you see rather than arriving as a separate line, so we are not a zero-markup reseller and we do not claim to be.
Pick by bottleneck, not by brand
If your evenings go on postage cost, the zero-fee door wins. If they go on copying addresses between screens, the workflow engine wins. Those are different complaints and they have different answers.
Free is a business model, not a favour
A vendor paid by the carriers is a real arrangement with real economics behind it, and it works. It also shapes which carriers appear on the screen, which is worth knowing before you assume a rate list is exhaustive.
Neither is wrong at the right volume
A hundred orders a week through a storefront and a single box a month are not the same problem. Most of the arguments online about these two are people at opposite ends of that range talking past each other.
Choosing between the two
Does Pirate Ship charge a monthly fee?
Its site states no monthly fees, payment fees or hidden costs, and says the company is paid by the carriers rather than by the shipper, checked at pirateship.com on 2026-07-28.
What does ShipStation cost?
Plans are published as starting at $14.99/month for Starter, $29.99/month for Standard and $349.99/month for Premium, with volume tiers from 50 to 100,000 shipments a month, checked at shipstation.com/pricing on 2026-07-28.
Which one should a small seller pick?
That depends on where the time goes. At low volume the subscription is the biggest line in the shipping bill, so a zero-fee route usually wins. Once order handling takes longer than the postage costs, the automation starts paying for itself.
Where does SMKlog fit between them?
Off to one side rather than in between. We sell single US domestic parcel labels with no plan and no signup for the first quotes, across USPS, UPS and FedEx. We have no automation, no order sync and no inventory features at all.
