Carriers price the movement. Everything that happens on your table before the handover is the other half of the line.
The shipping half, priced live
This is a soft parcel, the commonest thing a small seller posts: a folded t-shirt in a 12 x 9 x 1 in mailer at 0.7 lb. Quoted through our calculator on 2026-07-28 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303, all five returned rates printed.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Transit window returned |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $8.86 | 8-9 business days |
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $10.06 | 6-7 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $10.31 | 2-3 business days |
| UPS | 3 Day Select | $15.13 | 5-6 business days |
| UPS | 2nd Day Air | $15.38 | 2-3 business days |
The USPS row also came back with a $10.95 counter figure attached, which is what the same parcel prices at over a window. That $2.09 is the part of a shipping line most buyers never see and most sellers forget to mention.
Speed is the other axis. UPS Ground quoted 2-3 business days for $1.45 more than the cheapest row, which quoted 8-9. On a soft parcel that is often the better line to charge for.
The handling half, itemised
Handling is the part nobody publishes a rate card for, because it is your own cost of doing the work. It splits into things we can price from a source and things we cannot, and pretending otherwise is how sellers end up underquoting.
- Packaging, sometimes free. USPS lists Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express packaging in its free supplies category at $0.00, including a small box at 9-7/16 x 6-7/16 x 2-3/16 in, a large box at 12-1/4 x 12 x 8-1/2 in, a side-loading large box at 15 x 12 x 3-1/8 in and Tyvek envelopes in packs of ten (store.usps.com, retrieved 2026-07-27). That packaging belongs to those services.
- Packaging, usually not free. Plain cartons, poly mailers, tape, void fill and labels come off your own receipts. We hold no sourced price for any of them, so this page prints none rather than inventing a plausible one.
- Printing. Paper, toner and the printer itself, spread across however many labels it runs before it dies.
- Time. The minutes spent measuring, packing, taping, labelling and handing over. This is usually the largest number in the list and the one most often set to zero.
Work out your own figure the boring way: buy a batch of packaging, count the parcels it produced, divide. That number is worth more than any published average because it describes your bench rather than someone else.
Putting the two together
For a buyer the useful thing is knowing which half is which. Shipping is checkable against a carrier price and handling is not, which is why a combined line invites suspicion that a separated one does not.
For a seller there are three workable policies, and the choice is really about what you want arguments to be about. Charge actual postage and a stated handling amount, and the postage half stays defensible. Charge one combined figure, and it needs to be low enough that nobody bothers checking. Build shipping into the item price, and the line disappears along with the complaint.
Whichever you pick, price the finished parcel rather than the object. Our guide to setting a shipping charge works through the decision with the trade-offs in front of you.
Handling is not a hidden markup
It covers real materials and real minutes. The problem is never charging for it, only failing to say that is what the number is.
Free packaging has a service attached
The USPS supplies listed at $0.00 are Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express packaging. A cheaper ground service needs a box you supply yourself.
Buyers compare against the wrong number
Someone checking your line against a counter price will think you undercharged. Someone checking it against a commercial rate will think you padded it. Stating both halves ends the argument.
Shipping and handling, answered
What does shipping and handling mean?
Shipping is what a carrier charges to carry the parcel. Handling is the seller cost of preparing it, covering packaging, printing and labour, and the two are usually merged into a single line on a receipt.
How much is handling on a small parcel?
It depends entirely on what you pack with, and the honest answer is that it comes off your own receipts. USPS lists Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express packaging at $0.00 in its free supplies category, which takes the box out of the sum if you are sending Priority.
What did a t-shirt mailer cost to ship?
A 12 x 9 x 1 in mailer at 0.7 lb from Newark 07102 to Atlanta 30303 quoted $8.86 with USPS Ground Advantage on 2026-07-28, with FedEx Ground Economy at $10.06 and UPS Ground at $10.31.
Should handling be charged separately?
Either way works as long as the total is honest. Splitting it out lets a buyer check the postage against a public rate and keeps the argument off the carrier, which matters most when someone compares your line against a figure they looked up themselves.
