Two products, two ceilings, and a paperwork rule that starts at a very low value.
The ceiling that runs out first
| Product | Weight ceiling | Size ceiling | Declaration |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Global Express Guaranteed” | 70 lb on paper | 46 in long, 108 in length and girth | Suspended since 29 September 2024 |
| Priority Mail Express International | 66 lb | 36 in long, 79 in length and girth | PS Form 2976-B inside PS Form 2976-E |
| Priority Mail International | 44 lb | 42 in long, 79 in length and girth | PS Form 2976-A inside PS Form 2976-E |
| First-Class Package International Service | 4 lb | Small packet limits, IMM 251.22 and 251.23 | PS Form 2976 |
| Airmail M-bags, one addressee | 66 lb | Direct sack of printed matter | PS Form 2976 |
Most destinations set the same 66 lb on both parcel products. El Salvador does not, and 44 lb is roughly where a box of clothes, shoes, canned goods and school supplies for a household lands once it is taped shut. Weigh the packed carton before choosing a product rather than after, because the fix at that point is either splitting the load into two boxes or paying for the express tier that was never the plan.
One more asymmetry sits in the size column. The express product is capped at 36 inches of length against 42 inches on the ordinary parcel, so a long carton and a heavy carton fail on opposite products. Declared-value cover for merchandise follows the same split: the listing marks it available on the express product and not available on Priority Mail International to this country.
The 4 lb tier cannot carry anything dutiable
The first observation on the listing is short and it disqualifies the cheapest route for most senders: First-Class Mail International and First-Class Package International Service items may not contain dutiable articles bound for El Salvador.
That is a content rule rather than a weight rule, and it does not bend because the parcel is small. A pair of sneakers under 4 lb is dutiable merchandise, so it does not belong on that product no matter how neatly it fits. What is left for goods is the parcel tier, with its 44 lb ceiling and its customs form, or the express tier above it. Senders who have used the light product to Mexico or Colombia without trouble are the ones most likely to trip over this, because the same box travels differently the moment the country changes.
The paperwork ladder starts at fifty dollars
El Salvador is one of the few destinations that still routes invoices through its own consulates, and the listing sets out exactly which rung a shipment sits on.
- Gift below 50 dollars. No invoice is required at all.
- Gift at 50 dollars or above. An invoice is required, and the sender should submit copies to a Salvadoran consulate in the form Salvadoran regulations prescribe.
- Anything commercial, at any value. A commercial invoice is required regardless of what the goods are worth.
- Commercial below 50 dollars. Three copies of the invoice, which need not be legalized, mailed straight to the addressee.
- Anything at 50 dollars or above. The consulate returns two legalized copies to the sender, who mails them to the addressee directly. The listing is explicit that they are not enclosed in the parcel.
- Claiming a trade agreement rate. A certificate of origin is required only when exemption from duty or a modified rate is being claimed.
Salvadoran consuls sit in principal cities across the United States, so the legalization step is a local errand rather than a mail run to Central America. Build the time for it into the plan: the copies have to reach the addressee before the parcel does, or the box waits while the paperwork catches up.
Correos de El Salvador also asks for the addressee's landline or mobile telephone number on the customs form of every trackable item, meaning anything sent with Registered Mail, Priority Mail Express International or Priority Mail International. The number is what lets the postal service call or text the household when the item lands, and leaving it blank is a quiet way to add days.
Where the express product actually goes
Express coverage is not national. The listing publishes a served list, and an address outside it is not on the express map at all.
- Ahuachapan
- Chalatenango
- Cojutepeque
- La Union
- Nueva San Salvador
- San Francisco Gotera
- San Miguel
- San Salvador
- San Vincente
- Santa Ana
- Santa Rosa de Lina
- Santa Tecla
- Sensuntepeque
- Sonsonate
- Usulutan
- Zacatecoluca
Sixteen points, spelled as the listing spells them. A rural address in Morazan or a canton outside those towns takes the ordinary parcel product, which is the same one already carrying the lower weight ceiling. That pairing is worth knowing before a relative is promised a delivery date.
What the household pays when it lands
Two separate charges decide the bill, and only one of them has a threshold underneath it.
| Charge | How it applies |
|---|---|
| Import tariff | Waived for individuals on non-commercial online purchases below 300 dollars, under the 2021 Law to Facilitate Non-Commercial Online Purchases |
| Value added tax | 13 percent, still payable on those same purchases and on imports generally |
| Paperwork customs expects | A customs declaration, an invoice, transport documents, a certificate of origin, any licenses or permits, and payment of duties and taxes |
The tariff waiver is written for a person ordering online, not for a business, and it does not touch the tax line. Anyone treating the 300 dollar figure as a clean allowance will be surprised at the counter, because the tax applies underneath it. A shipment that is genuinely a gift between relatives sits outside the online-purchase framing entirely and is judged on its declared value and contents.
What will not travel, and what needs a stamp on it
The prohibition list for El Salvador is short by international standards, which makes the entries on it easier to remember.
- Coins, banknotes, securities payable to bearer, traveler's checks, platinum, gold and silver whether manufactured or not, precious stones, jewelry and other valuable articles.
- Gambling equipment.
- Perishable infectious biological substances.
- Radioactive materials.
- Unstamped cigarette paper.
The one restriction on the list is oddly specific and easy to satisfy: cigarettes have to carry the words “Importacion a El Salvador” printed or stamped on each package. Unstamped cigarette paper being prohibited outright while stamped cigarettes are merely restricted tells you what the rule is really policing, and it is the sort of detail that decides whether a parcel is opened or waved through.
Who puts a number on this shipment
Checkout here sells US domestic parcel labels and four international lanes, none of which reach Central America, so this page carries no Salvadoran figure. Any number printed here would be one nobody at this end could defend on the day you clicked it.
A carton moving inside the United States, including the drive-time leg to a consolidator that assembles Central American loads, takes about two minutes to price in the calculator. SMKlog sells parcel labels only. Settle the consular question first, because it changes the timeline more than the postage choice does.

Common questions
Which product runs out of headroom first?
Priority Mail International stops at 44 lb on this lane, which is the figure that catches people out, while Priority Mail Express International carries 66 lb. First-Class Package International Service stops at 4 lb, and a direct sack of printed matter to one addressee runs to 66 lb.
Does a gift parcel need an invoice?
Below 50 dollars, no. At 50 dollars and above the listing asks the sender to lodge copies of the invoice with a Salvadoran consulate, which returns two legalized copies. Those copies are mailed to the addressee separately rather than packed inside the parcel.
Will the family in El Salvador pay tax on the box?
Value added tax at 13 percent is charged on imports whatever they are worth. Import tariffs are waived on non-commercial online purchases below 300 dollars under a 2021 Salvadoran law, according to the United States Department of Commerce country commercial guide read 2026-08-07.
Does the express product reach the whole country?
No. The country listing names sixteen served points, from San Salvador and Santa Ana down to Zacatecoluca and Sensuntepeque. An address outside that set is not on the express map, and the ordinary parcel product is the route to it.
Can I add declared-value protection to the parcel?
Not on Priority Mail International to El Salvador, where the listing marks merchandise cover unavailable. The express product does carry it for merchandise, though jewelry, precious metals and other valuables are prohibited on that product to this destination anyway.
