The duty relief is rationed by the number of shipments a person receives in a year, which makes timing part of the packing decision.
The relief, as the customs board set it out
The Nigeria Customs Service Board announced a de minimis threshold in a release dated 7 September 2025, taking effect the following day. A de minimis threshold is the value beneath which imported goods are released without customs duties and related taxes. Nigeria had not published one before.
| Term | What the release says |
|---|---|
| Threshold value | 300 United States dollars |
| In force from | Monday 8 September 2025 |
| What it covers | Low-value imports, e-commerce consignments and passenger baggage |
| How often | Four importations per annum |
| What it excludes | Anything that is a prohibited or restricted item |
Read the last two rows together and the practical shape appears. The allowance is a yearly ration held by the person receiving the goods, not a property of each parcel, so four separate boxes at 290 dollars each land clean while the fifth does not. Splitting one order across five shipments to stay under the line therefore costs more than sending it as one. And the exclusion at the bottom means the relief never rescues an item that was inadmissible in the first place, however little it is worth.
Hardware of all kinds
That is the entire entry, word for word, on the postal country listing for Nigeria. It is the shortest prohibition in the country conditions and by some distance the widest, and it is the one that surprises people: a padlock, a set of hinges, a socket set or a box of screws mailed to a relative running a workshop is prohibited matter, not a declaration problem.
The rest of the list is more predictable but worth reading before packing. Arms, ammunition, caps and metal cartridges for firearms. Coins, banknotes and currency notes, with a single opening for consignments sent by a bank and addressed to a bank in Nigeria. Lottery circulars and advertisements, which reaches promotional mailings as well as tickets. Perishable biological substances, listed twice so that the infectious and the noninfectious are both covered. And radioactive materials.
The country listing for Nigeria carries no observations section at all, where other destinations use that space for advice about licenses and addressing. Nothing softens the prohibitions here and nothing explains them; the list is the whole of the guidance.
Three restrictions that need a document
Used clothing
Admitted, but only with a certificate of disinfection accompanying it. That document has to exist before the parcel is mailed, because a held item cannot be cured with paperwork sent afterwards.
Medicines
Proprietary preparations are caught alongside prescription drugs, and penicillin, streptomycin and similar substances require a license. A box of over-the-counter remedies is not the neutral gift it looks like.
Gold and gemstones
Precious stones and manufactured gold, platinum or silver are admitted only up to a value of five francs. The unit is archaic and the ceiling is effectively nil, so treat jewelry as unmailable on this lane.
The five-franc clause is a survival from an older postal convention rather than a current currency figure, and no conversion makes it generous. Anything worth sending is worth more than the limit permits, which puts jewelry, bullion and loose stones outside the postal channel entirely.
What the post will carry, and what it will not cover
| Product | Weight ceiling | Longest side | Length plus girth | Customs form | Indemnity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Priority Mail Express International | 66 lb | 36 in | 79 in | PS Form 2976-B inside PS Form 2976-E | Per the international manual |
| Priority Mail International | 66 lb | 42 in | 79 in | PS Form 2976-A inside PS Form 2976-E | Not available |
| First-Class Package International Service | 4 lb | Sizes per the international manual | PS Form 2976 | None offered | |
| First-Class Mail International | 3.5 oz letters, 15.994 oz large envelopes | Sizes per the international manual | None, unless otherwise required | None offered | |
| Airmail M-bags | 66 lb | Sack, not a box | PS Form 2976 | None offered | |
The second row is the one to weigh. Priority Mail International is the workhorse product for a heavy box, and on this destination it comes without indemnity, so nothing is recoverable through the postal channel if the parcel does not arrive. That is a reason to keep the declared contents modest, to photograph the packing, and to think hard before putting a laptop or a phone in a postal parcel at all.
Nigeria sits in price group 9 for both Priority Mail products and price group 5 for First-Class Package International Service. Areas served is recorded as all of Nigeria, so no town needs checking against a list. Global Express Guaranteed has been suspended on this route since 29 September 2024, which removes the fastest option and leaves the express product as the quickest thing available.
Getting a number for the lane
This page prints no prices. An international parcel has a cost that depends on the product, the box, the week and whether the contents are admissible at all, and a figure typed into a page today would be wrong by the time somebody reads it. SMKlog's online international labels cover Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia; other destinations are not sold here.

Common questions
How much can I send to Nigeria without duty?
Consignments worth 300 United States dollars or less clear without customs duties and related taxes, under the threshold the Nigeria Customs Service Board approved with effect from 8 September 2025. The relief is capped at four importations per person per year.
Why was my parcel of tools stopped in Nigeria?
Hardware of all kinds is a prohibition on the Nigerian country listing, phrased exactly that broadly. Fixings, fittings, locks, hand tools and ironmongery are all reachable by it, and a prohibition is not something a declaration or a fee can work around.
Can I mail secondhand clothes to Nigeria?
Only with a certificate of disinfection traveling with the parcel. Nigeria places used clothing under restriction rather than banning it, so the route exists, but the certificate has to be obtained before the item is mailed rather than after it is held.
Can a valuable parcel to Nigeria be covered against loss?
Not on Priority Mail International. The country listing marks indemnity unavailable on that product for Nigeria, so a high-value item travels at the sender's risk unless it moves on a commercial service that offers cover on the route.
What are the postal ceilings on a Nigerian parcel?
Both parcel products stop at 66 lb and at 79 inches of length plus girth. They part company on the longest side: 36 inches on the express product against 42 inches on the standard one.
