One quote returns both tiers together, so the comparison is a single moment rather than two guesses.
The same parcel, both services, one request
Nine boxes went out on one lane on one morning, and both UPS tiers came back inside the same response for each. The last column is simple subtraction, so you can see exactly where the economy tier stops being economical.
| Box and weight | Ground Saver | UPS Ground | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 x 9 x 4 in, 2 lb | $10.52 | $11.07 | Saver saves $0.55 |
| 6 x 5 x 5 in, 2 lb | $10.18 | $10.67 | Saver saves $0.49 |
| 12 x 10 x 6 in, 5 lb | $13.52 | $14.05 | Saver saves $0.53 |
| 8.6 x 5.4 x 1.6 in, 20 lb | $10.17 | $12.56 | Saver saves $2.39 |
| 11 x 8.5 x 5.5 in, 20 lb | $12.94 | $16.19 | Saver saves $3.25 |
| 12 x 12 x 5.5 in, 20 lb | $13.57 | $17.38 | Saver saves $3.81 |
| 16 x 14 x 10 in, 16 lb | $20.50 | $23.70 | Saver saves $3.20 |
| 20 x 16 x 12 in, 25 lb | $46.73 | $29.52 | Saver costs $17.21 more |
| 24 x 18 x 14 in, 50 lb | $66.50 | $45.01 | Saver costs $21.49 more |
Small dense boxes are where the economy tier earns its name. A 20 lb parcel in a small footprint saved $2.39, and the same weight in a slightly larger box saved $3.81. Then the pricing turns: a 25 lb box in a 20 x 16 x 12 in carton cost $17.21 more on the cheaper-sounding service, and a 50 lb box cost $21.49 more. If your parcels are bulky, quoting both is not optional.
What the days column costs you
Price is only half the decision. UPS states that Ground Saver transit is typically comparable to UPS Ground plus approximately one to two additional business days, checked 2026-07-28. Our captures show something that matters just as much on the screen.
- UPS Ground returned a window every time. On this lane every Ground row came back reading 2-3 business days.
- Ground Saver returned none. Every Saver row in our captures carried a day count with no transit window attached at all, which is why any table that prints a Saver range is inventing one.
- The guarantee does not cover it. The UPS Service Guarantee page lists the guarantee as active for named air and international services and states that it remains suspended for all other UPS shipments and services. A ground economy tier is not on that list.
- The last mile can change hands. UPS says packages on this service may be delivered by UPS or the USPS, and that delivery photo confirmation exists only where UPS makes the delivery itself.
A rule of thumb that survives contact with the data
Under about 20 lb in a compact box, take the economy tier and pocket a few dollars. Over 20 lb, or in a carton with a lot of air in it, quote both every time, because the ranking on this lane inverted completely between 16 and 25 lb.
Residential only, but PO Boxes included
UPS scopes this service to residential addresses, and its footprint covers PO Boxes and APO, FPO and DPO addresses that standard UPS Ground cannot serve. A commercial delivery point takes it off the table entirely.
Two dollars is not worth a customer email
If a saving lands under a dollar and the parcel is going to a paying customer who was told a date, take the faster row. Half the rows in our table saved less than 60 cents while giving back one to two business days.
Ground vs Ground Saver: questions
Is UPS Ground Saver always cheaper than UPS Ground?
No. On Newark NJ 07102 to Atlanta GA 30303 on 2026-07-28 it saved between 49 cents and $3.81 on compact parcels up to 20 lb, then cost $17.21 more on a 25 lb box and $21.49 more on a 50 lb box. Bulky cartons are where the ranking flips.
How many days slower is Ground Saver?
UPS publishes it as typically comparable to UPS Ground plus approximately one to two additional business days. In our captures every UPS Ground row returned a 2-3 business day window on this lane, while the Ground Saver rows returned a day count with no window attached.
Does the UPS service guarantee cover Ground Saver?
The UPS Service Guarantee page lists the guarantee as active for a set of air and international services and states that it remains suspended for all other UPS shipments and services not specified there, checked 2026-07-28. A ground economy tier is not among the named services.
Which one should a small seller default to?
Take the economy tier for compact parcels under roughly 20 lb where a day either way does not matter, and quote both whenever the carton is bulky or the customer was given a date. The savings under a dollar are rarely worth the extra transit.
