The route decides whether you print anything, and whether anyone comes to your door.
The four routes UPS publishes
All wording below comes from ups.com support and business pages, read 2026-07-28. Where UPS does not publish a price for something, that cell says so rather than guessing.
| Route | How the label reaches you | Where the box goes | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Label in the box | UPS tells shippers they can send return labels to customers whenever they create their outbound shipping labels | Any convenient UPS location | Not published on the pages we read |
| Emailed label and mobile barcode | UPS says it will email the customer a return shipping label and a mobile barcode, and that they can then print the label at home | Print at home and drop off, or scan and print by mobile barcode at a UPS location | Not published on the pages we read |
| Driver brings the label | UPS says it will create the return label ahead of time and the driver will bring it when they pick up the shipment | Handed to the driver at your door | Not published on the pages we read; the driver will make three pickup attempts |
| Box-free counter drop | No label at all: customers bring a box-free return to The UPS Store | The UPS Store counter | Not published on the pages we read |
UPS does not attach a dollar figure to any of those routes on the customer-facing pages, which is normal for services sold through account agreements. The one cost it does flag on the consumer page is collection: UPS says it can come to you for an additional fee, without naming the amount.
No shipper, no account, still need a label
All four routes above assume a company is on the other end paying for the return. Plenty of returns have nobody in that seat: a marketplace seller taking an item back, a private sale gone wrong, a warranty claim, a loan being repaid in cardboard. UPS itself points those people at two places on its consumer page, quoted below.
Your shipper may have included a label in your package, or instructions to print one. It's easy to create a shipping label online, or visit The UPS Store to create the label.Per ups.com, checked 2026-07-28
Our checkout is a third option in the same category. Type the sender's ZIP as the origin and the destination ZIP as the delivery point, pick a service, pay once, and print. No UPS account, no monthly fee, tracking included, and the same UPS network carries the box.
| Service | Price | Window returned |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground Saver | $12.07 | No window supplied on this quote |
| UPS Ground | $12.47 | 2-3 business days |
| UPS 2nd Day Air | $21.05 | 2-3 business days |
On the same quote, USPS Ground Advantage took that box for $8.48 and FedEx Ground Economy for $12.42, so UPS was not the cheapest option on that lane on that day. It was the fastest of the ground tiers though: UPS Ground quoted 2-3 business days against 5-6 for both economy services. Speed and price rarely arrive in the same row.
Voids have a hard stop
Per ups.com, a label can be voided online within 90 days of creation, then only by contacting UPS between 90 and 180 days, and a void will not be processed after 180 days at all. Retrieved 2026-07-27. A return label sitting unused through a slow quarter can run past that quietly.
The mobile barcode saves the printer
UPS describes scanning and printing by mobile barcode at a UPS location, and separately suggests emailing the label to yourself or a friend to print later. Between those two, a household with no working printer still has a route. Our own no-printer guide covers the equivalents at the other carriers.
Three attempts, then it stops
On the collection route UPS says the driver will make three pickup attempts. If the box will not be packed by then, a drop-off is the safer arrangement. Nobody wants a return that fails on a scheduling technicality.
UPS returns questions
What are the UPS return options?
Read on ups.com on 2026-07-28, four of them. A label sent with the outbound shipment, a label emailed with a mobile barcode that the customer prints at home, a label the driver brings when collecting the parcel, and a box-free return brought to The UPS Store. UPS does not publish a per-route price on those customer-facing pages.
Can I make a UPS return label without an account?
Yes. UPS itself points customers at creating a shipping label online or visiting The UPS Store. Our checkout is a third route: enter the two ZIPs, choose a service, pay once and print, with no UPS account and no subscription. The parcel travels the same UPS network either way.
What does a UPS return cost?
Quoted through our calculator on 2026-07-28, a 13 x 8 x 5 in box at 3 lb from Atlanta, GA to Newark, NJ came to $12.07 with UPS Ground Saver, $12.47 with UPS Ground and $21.05 with UPS 2nd Day Air, all at the full checkout price. On the same quote USPS Ground Advantage was $8.48, so it pays to look across carriers.
How long do I have to void a UPS return label?
Per ups.com, retrieved 2026-07-27, you can void online within 90 days of creating the label. Between 90 and 180 days you have to contact UPS to request it, and after 180 days a void will not be processed. Nothing about that window depends on whether the parcel ever moved.
