Every UPS row SMKlog quotes already carries a tracking number. Nothing above it toggles that off or charges to turn it on.
Why the question keeps coming up
The confusion has a real source. UPS does sell paid delivery products — signature confirmation and a Premium tier of UPS My Choice both cost money, and both sit near tracking in the checkout flow. It is a reasonable guess that a third nearby feature is paid too. It is also wrong: the tracking number itself is not one of the two paid products, it is what every UPS rate already includes before either of them gets added.
UPS says so on its cheapest tier
If a bare-bones economy service still ships with tracking, nothing cheaper is being sold without it. UPS's own Ground Saver page settles the question on the tier built to compete on price alone.
UPS Ground Saver shipments include end-to-end tracking using a UPS tracking number.UPS, Ground Saver, ups.com/us/en/support/shipping-support/shipping-costs-rates/ups-ground-saver, read 2026-08-31
Ground Saver often hands the final leg to USPS rather than a UPS driver, which is a separate question about who scans the box last, not about whether a number exists. Our UPS tracking walkthrough covers that handoff and what the status line looks like when it happens.
Three UPS rates, one box, no separate line for tracking
We quoted a small electronics box, 12 × 9 × 6 in at 4 lb, from Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Denver, CO 80202 on 2026-08-31. Each price below is the complete checkout total for that UPS service — there is no add-on step for the tracking number anywhere in it.
| Service | Price | Transit window returned |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground Saver | $15.41 | none returned |
| UPS Ground | $16.10 | 3-4 business days |
| UPS 3 Day Select | $23.05 | 3-4 business days |
UPS Ground Saver came back with no transit estimate on this particular quote — our rate feed prints that field blank rather than guess at one. A blank transit field says nothing about the tracking number, which is generated the moment the label prints regardless of whether an estimate came back with it.
What actually costs extra
Signature confirmation
UPS sells Signature Required, Commercial Signature Required and Adult Signature Required as separate priced tiers, each collecting proof of who accepted the package. It is billed on top of the ground or air rate, not folded into it. Our UPS signature required guide carries the published fee for each tier.
UPS My Choice Premium
UPS My Choice is a delivery-management account layered on top of tracking, and it has two tiers.
UPS My Choice offers two levels of membership: Basic (Free) or Premium (Paid).UPS, UPS My Choice, ups.com/us/en/track/ups-my-choice, read 2026-08-31; Premium listed at 19.99 USD a year
The free Basic tier already covers viewing and following shipments, which is the part most people mean by tracking. The paid Premium tier, at 19.99 USD a year, adds delivery-management features on top of that — UPS's own comparison lists unlimited delivery-window changes among them — not the tracking number itself. A shipper never has to touch My Choice at all for a UPS label to carry a number.

UPS tracking cost questions
Does UPS charge for tracking?
No. A tracking number ships in the price of every UPS package service SMKlog quotes, from Ground Saver up through 3 Day Select, and none of our checkout rows carry a separate charge for it.
Is UPS tracking free on Ground Saver, UPS's cheapest ground tier?
Yes. UPS's own Ground Saver page states that Ground Saver shipments include end-to-end tracking using a UPS tracking number, read on ups.com 2026-08-31. UPS's least expensive ground service still ships with the number attached.
How much does a UPS tracking number cost?
Nothing by itself. The number is created the moment a UPS label prints, and it is not something a shipper adds, removes, or pays for as a separate line item at checkout.
What does UPS actually charge extra for, if not tracking?
Signature confirmation and UPS My Choice Premium. Signature confirmation is a UPS add-on priced by tier, and My Choice Premium runs 19.99 USD a year on top of a free Basic membership. Neither one is what puts the tracking number on the label.
Does UPS My Choice replace basic package tracking?
No, it sits on top of it. UPS's own My Choice page describes two levels of membership, a free Basic tier and a paid Premium tier at 19.99 USD a year, read on ups.com 2026-08-31. The free tier already includes viewing and following shipments; the paid tier adds delivery-management features, not the tracking number itself.
