One gets the thing there and shows scans along the way. The other exists to testify about a letter afterward.
A mail class and an add-on are different animals
Ground Advantage is postage: it is the thing that physically moves a package and tracks it to the door. Certified Mail moves nothing. It is a layer purchased on top of a letter that generates evidence — a receipt proving the mailing date, a delivery record USPS keeps, and with Return Receipt the recipient's signature coming back to you. Comparing them is really deciding whether you are shipping an object or building a paper trail.
| Question | USPS Ground Advantage | Certified Mail |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A package mail class | An extra service on letter mail |
| Rides on | Itself; it is the postage | First-Class Mail or Priority Mail |
| What you get | Tracking scans, door delivery | Mailing receipt and a delivery record; recipient's signature with Return Receipt |
| Effect on speed | 2–5 business days published | None; it moves at the pace of the class beneath it |
| Available together | No — Certified is not offered on Ground Advantage | |
That last row is the practical trap. People who want proof AND a box sometimes assume certified can ride along; it cannot. A package gets its evidence from tracking plus Signature Confirmation or an adult-signature option, both of which the same USPS page lists for Ground Advantage.
Choosing by what you are actually sending
Paper that must be provable
Tax filings, legal notices, contract terminations: flat paper, and the mailing date is the point. Certified on First-Class Mail is built for exactly this; the full fee stack is in our Certified Mail cost guide.
Documents with bulk or deadline
A binder, a box of files, originals someone is waiting on: ship it as a package with a signature option added, and let tracking stand as the evidence trail.
Merchandise
Certified does not apply to goods at all. A sold item wants a package label, tracking, and declared-value protection when the value warrants it.
For the middle case we quoted a real one on 2026-08-09: a one-pound document box, 12 × 9 × 2 in, Newark NJ to Atlanta. USPS Ground Advantage came back at $9.91 with a 4-5 business day window and USPS Priority Mail at $14.49 with 3-4 days, both all-in at our checkout with tracking included. When the contents are irreplaceable originals, the faster window is usually worth the spread.

Common questions
Can you send Certified Mail with Ground Advantage?
No. USPS's extra services page, read 2026-08-10, pairs Certified Mail with First-Class Mail and Priority Mail. Ground Advantage takes Signature Confirmation and adult-signature options instead, which capture a signature without the certified record of mailing.
Which one is for packages?
Ground Advantage. Certified Mail is a service layered onto letter mail, so when the thing being sent is an object rather than paper, certified is simply not on the menu and a tracked package label is the tool.
Does Certified Mail deliver faster?
No. It adds a record, not speed. The piece travels at whatever pace First-Class Mail or Priority Mail was already going to move it, and the certified layer just documents the journey.
Is package tracking the same as a Certified record?
They answer different questions. Tracking shows scans and a delivery event so you know where the box is. Certified produces a mailing receipt proving the date you sent it plus a delivery record USPS retains, which is the form of proof courts and agencies usually want.
What did the package route cost for a box of documents?
$9.91 on USPS Ground Advantage with a 4-5 business day window, or $14.49 on USPS Priority Mail at 3-4 days, for a one-pound 12 x 9 x 2 in document box from Newark NJ to Atlanta, quoted at our checkout on 2026-08-09, all-in with tracking.
