Ground Advantage priced 5 lb and 10 lb identically on our lane. Ground Economy climbed from $12.38 to $16.31 between them.
Same box, three weights, both services
| Weight | USPS Ground Advantage | FedEx Ground Economy | Cheaper here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 lb | $8.42 2-3 business days | $10.66 3-4 business days | Ground Advantage |
| 5 lb | $10.26 2-3 business days | $12.38 3-4 business days | Ground Advantage |
| 10 lb | $10.26 2-3 business days | $16.31 3-4 business days | Ground Advantage, widest gap |
Two things stand out. Ground Advantage did not move between 5 and 10 lb on this lane — the box hit a pricing plateau — while Ground Economy kept climbing, exactly the shape FedEx's own positioning predicts when it calls the service ideal for 1 to 10 lb shipments. And the postal estimate ran a day shorter at every weight. A second lane told the sharper story: quoted to Phoenix, AZ the same day, the 2 lb box drew a $13.04 Ground Advantage rate and no Ground Economy rate at all, so on some lanes the comparison decides itself.
What each carrier publishes about its service
| Term | Ground Advantage (usps.com) | Ground Economy (fedex.com) |
|---|---|---|
| Published transit | Packages in 2-5 days | “Typically, delivery takes 2 to 7 business days” |
| Weight ceiling | 70 lb | 70 lb, pitched as ideal at 1-10 lb |
| Size ceiling | 130 in length plus girth | 130 in length plus girth |
| Residential reach | Postal network, every delivery address | “Full U.S. residential coverage”, Monday-Sunday |
| Tracking | Included in the price | Standard FedEx tracking |
| Included protection | Up to a hundred dollars, outbound and returns | None advertised on the service page |
| Who can buy it | Any Post Office counter or online | Contract shippers only, no walk-in retail |
The access row explains why this comparison is scarce. Ground Economy — the service FedEx ran for years as SmartPost — exists for volume shippers, and an individual only meets it through a platform holding the contract. Our calculator quotes it next to the postal and UPS options whenever the box qualifies, which is how the table above got filled from one screen.
Picking between them without overthinking
Under 5 lb, lean postal
Light boxes are where Ground Advantage's tiering is friendliest, and the included protection floor means a modest item ships covered without an add-on. Our 2 lb row priced the postal option at $8.42 against the FedEx $10.66 before counting that floor.
Check both above 5 lb anyway
Plateaus like our flat $10.26 stretch are lane-specific, not a law. On a different distance the ordering can flip, which is the entire argument for quoting a real box on a real lane instead of trusting a chart.
Sunday matters to almost nobody
Ground Economy's Monday-Sunday delivery claim sounds decisive until you remember the recipient mostly cares about the date, not the weekday. Weigh it only when a weekend arrival genuinely changes something.

Common questions
Which is cheaper, Ground Advantage or FedEx Ground Economy?
On our 2026-08-09 quotes for a 12 x 9 x 4 in box from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Columbus, OH, Ground Advantage won every weight: $8.42 against $10.66 at 2 lb, $10.26 against $12.38 at 5 lb, and $10.26 against $16.31 at 10 lb, all-in checkout prices.
Which service is faster?
USPS publishes 2-5 days for Ground Advantage; FedEx publishes typically 2 to 7 business days for Ground Economy (both carrier pages read 2026-08-09). On our quoted lane the estimates ran 2-3 business days postal and 3-4 for FedEx, since Ground Economy hands final delivery through a slower network.
Do the two services take the same packages?
Nearly. Both top out at 70 lb and 130 inches of length plus girth. FedEx pitches Ground Economy as ideal at 1 to 10 lb, and our 10 lb quote shows why: its price climbed while Ground Advantage sat flat.
Can I buy FedEx Ground Economy at a FedEx counter?
No. FedEx sells it as a contract service for shippers rather than a retail one, so walk-in counters do not quote it. It reaches individual shippers through platforms that hold the arrangement, which is how it appears alongside postal rates in our calculator.
Does either include tracking and protection?
Both track end to end. USPS also states Ground Advantage includes shipping protection up to a hundred dollars on outbound and return shipments; the FedEx Ground Economy page advertises no equivalent inclusion (both read 2026-08-09), so cover for a valuable box is worth adding at checkout either way.
