The concept is shared. The numbers behind it are not, and only one of the three is likely to apply to your box.
What we do and do not sell
SMKlog sells parcel labels with no account required: describe the item, see live rates from several carriers, pay and print — US domestic, plus international lanes to Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia with the customs declaration completed at checkout. We do not sell warehousing or fulfillment, and we do not plug into marketplace back ends. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
Where parcel ends at each carrier
| Carrier | Weight ceiling | Length plus girth ceiling | Single side | What happens above it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | 70 lb on every service | 130 in, or 108 in on Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express | not separately published in the limits we captured | Ground Advantage and Parcel Select move to oversized pricing above 108 in |
| UPS | 150 lb | 165 in | 108 in | the shipment is over maximum limits and is not a parcel |
| FedEx | 150 lb before it becomes freight | 165 in before it becomes freight | oversize charge starts at 96 in | an oversize charge applies above 96 in length or 130 in length and girth |
The useful summary is that USPS draws the tightest box and UPS the widest, with FedEx close behind. A 60 lb carton is a parcel everywhere. A 100 lb carton is a parcel at two carriers and not at the third. A 200 lb crate is a parcel nowhere, and no amount of repackaging will change that.
Six ordinary parcels, priced
Definitions get abstract quickly, so here are six things people actually ship, quoted on one lane on one morning. Every one of them sits comfortably inside all three carrier definitions.
| What was shipped | Package | Weight | Cheapest quote | Carrier and service |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paperback book | 8 x 5 x 1.5 in box | 1 lb | $9.91 | USPS Ground Advantage |
| Cotton t-shirt | 12 x 9 x 1 in poly mailer | 0.7 lb | $8.86 | USPS Ground Advantage |
| Smartphone | 9 x 6 x 1.5 in padded envelope | 0.6 lb | $8.86 | USPS Ground Advantage |
| Ceramic mug | 6 x 5 x 5 in box | 2 lb | $8.48 | USPS Ground Advantage |
| Household goods | 12 x 12 x 12 in carton | 15 lb | $17.01 | USPS Ground Advantage |
| Household goods | 20 x 16 x 12 in carton | 25 lb | $28.77 | FedEx Ground Economy |
Four of the six landed within about a dollar and a half of each other despite ranging from just over half a pound to two pounds, which is the small-parcel floor showing itself. The two cartons at the bottom are where weight and volume finally take over. Note the last row: at 25 lb the cheapest rate on that lane was not a postal one.
Parcel, package, mailpiece
Carriers use the words loosely and interchangeably in customer-facing copy, and none of them is a legal term you need to worry about. The figures in the table above are what actually decide how your shipment is handled.
When it stops being a parcel
Past the ceilings, shipping moves to pallets, freight class and a booking rather than a checkout. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
What travels with a parcel
Tracking comes with every label as standard. Shipping protection is an optional extra rather than something baked into the price, and coverage terms differ by carrier and by service.
Parcel questions
What is a parcel in shipping?
A package small and light enough to travel through a carrier's automated package network rather than on a pallet. Each carrier defines the boundary with its own weight and size ceilings rather than by any shared standard.
What is the maximum size of a parcel?
It depends on the carrier. USPS caps at 70 lb and 130 inches of length plus girth, with 108 inches on Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express. UPS caps at 150 lb, 165 inches of length and girth, and 108 inches on a single side. FedEx treats shipments past 150 lb or 165 inches of length plus girth as freight.
What does a typical parcel cost to send?
Six everyday parcels quoted from Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-28 came in between $8.48 for a mug in a small box and $28.77 for a 25 lb carton, with a book at $9.91 and a t-shirt in a mailer at $8.86.
What happens if my shipment is too big to be a parcel?
It moves to freight, which is booked with a freight carrier rather than bought at a checkout. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
