Describe the box and see which postal tier the rate screen puts in front of you, with its own transit signal.
The two services beside each other
Both figures columns were read off usps.com on 2026-07-28. Counter means a Post Office window; commercial is the tier reached by buying online.
| Priority Mail | Priority Mail Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Published delivery | 2 to 3 days | 1 to 3 days by 6 PM |
| Refund terms | none published | money-back guarantee |
| Starting price at a Post Office | $11.00 | $35.65 |
| Flat rate envelope, counter and commercial | $12.90 and $11.12 | $35.90 and $31.11 |
| Legal flat rate envelope | $13.25 and $11.66 | $36.20 and $31.43 |
| Padded flat rate envelope | $14.00 and $11.99 | $36.90 and $31.70 |
| Weight ceiling | 70 lb | 70 lb |
| Included coverage | up to $100 | up to $100 |
Three times the price for one or two days and a refund route. That is the trade in a sentence, and it explains why Express is a small share of postal parcel volume: most parcels are not worth the $24.65 gap between those two starting prices.
- The refund route. USPS instructs that where a shipment did not arrive on the delivery date or time printed on your receipt, you submit a refund request for failure of service within 30 days of the mailing date. The receipt is the document that decides it, not the estimate you were shown at purchase.
- Weekend reach. USPS lists Sunday and holiday delivery on Express as available in many major markets for an additional fee. Priority Mail carries no such option on the page.
- Same ceiling, same coverage. Both cap at 70 lb and both include up to $100 of coverage on most shipments, so neither of those is a reason to upgrade.
What Priority Mail quoted live
Priority Mail turned up in five of our 2026-07-28 captures on the same lane. Priority Mail Express appeared in none of them, which fits its position: our screen returns the five best-value services for the parcel described, and a $35 tier does not place against ground options on a routine box.
| Box and weight | Price | Estimate returned | Cheapest rate in the same request |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.6 x 5.4 x 1.6 in, 10 lb | $14.53 | 8-9 business days | $10.17 UPS Ground Saver |
| 8.6 x 5.4 x 1.6 in, 20 lb | $14.53 | 8-9 business days | $10.17 UPS Ground Saver |
| 11 x 8.5 x 5.5 in, 10 lb | $17.66 | 8-9 business days | $12.05 USPS Ground Advantage |
| 11 x 8.5 x 5.5 in, 20 lb | $17.66 | 8-9 business days | $12.05 USPS Ground Advantage |
| 12 x 12 x 5.5 in, 20 lb | $23.76 | 8-9 business days | $13.57 UPS Ground Saver |
One honest wrinkle in that table. The estimate column is the transit signal attached to each rate row, and on this lane it ran far wider than the 2 to 3 day standard USPS publishes for Priority Mail. Published service standards and quoted transit estimates are two different things, and neither one is a promise unless the service carries refund terms. Priority Mail does not.
Buy Express for the receipt, not the speed
The valuable part of the Express product is the date printed on the receipt and the 30-day window to claim against it. If a late arrival costs you nothing, you are paying triple for a service tier whose main feature you will never use.
Check the Sunday market before you promise one
Sunday and holiday delivery on Express is available in many major markets for an extra fee, which is not the same as everywhere. Confirm the destination is inside one before you tell a customer a Sunday date.
The flat rate envelopes tell the same story
A padded flat rate envelope is $11.99 commercial on Priority Mail and $31.70 on Express. Identical sleeve, identical contents, $19.71 apart. That gap is the price of the commitment, and it is worth naming out loud before you click.
Priority Mail and Express: the real questions
What is the difference between Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express?
Speed and recourse. USPS publishes Express as 1 to 3 day delivery by 6 PM with a money-back guarantee, and Priority Mail as 2 to 3 days with no refund terms on the page. Both cap at 70 lb and both include up to $100 of coverage, checked 2026-07-28.
How does the Priority Mail Express refund work?
USPS states that if a shipment did not arrive on the delivery date or time shown on the receipt, you submit a refund request for failure of service within 30 days of the mailing date. The receipt is the document that matters, so keep it.
How much more does Priority Mail Express cost?
A lot. USPS lists Express starting at $35.65 at a Post Office counter against $11.00 for Priority Mail. On the padded flat rate envelope the commercial prices are $31.70 and $11.99, a gap of $19.71 for the identical sleeve.
Does Priority Mail Express deliver on Sunday?
In some places. USPS lists Sunday and holiday delivery on Express as available in many major markets for an additional fee, which is a market-by-market thing rather than a nationwide one. Confirm the destination before promising a Sunday date.
