An October sale that stays returnable until the end of January is four months of postage risk on one order.
What large retailers put in writing
The extended gift-season window is a convention rather than a law, and the retailers who run one publish it. Three policies, all read on 2026-07-28.
| Retailer | Standard window | Gift-season treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Walmart | 90 days after purchase or receipt for most items; 30 days for Marketplace seller items | Most items purchased in-store or online from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31 |
| Target | 90 days for most items | Holiday and limited-time-only collections may have modified return policies; no dated extension published |
| Best Buy | 15 days for most items; 60 days for its paid membership tiers | Halloween and Christmas decoration categories are 15 days for all customers, including members |
Only one of the three publishes a dated extension. That matters if you sell on a marketplace and are trying to match a platform convention: the convention is real, but it is not uniform, and copying a competitor without reading the policy is how a seller ends up accepting returns nobody required them to accept.
The postage side, priced
Whatever window you set, the cost that follows is the return label. Small parcels are the common case for gift returns, and they are cheap. Three of them, quoted through the SMKlog calculator on 2026-07-28 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303, at the full checkout amount.
| Parcel | Box and weight | Price | Window returned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee mug | 6 x 5 x 5 in, 2 lb | $8.48 | 8-9 business days |
| Phone in a padded envelope | 9 x 6 x 1.5 in, 0.6 lb | $8.86 | 8-9 business days |
| Paperback book | 8 x 5 x 1.5 in, 1 lb | $9.91 | 8-9 business days |
Exactly $1.43 separates the cheapest and the dearest of those, so for small goods the return window costs you far less in postage than it does in held inventory and refund timing. The calculation changes fast with box size, which is the argument for shipping small goods in small boxes in the first place.
Print the label when the buyer is ready
Our terms state that unused labels may be eligible for a carrier void or postage refund only where the selected carrier allows it, and that those refunds are not certain and can take time. A label created in November for a return that happens in January is exposure you did not need to take.
The window is yours to set, the postage is not
You control how long you accept returns. You do not control what the carrier charges when the parcel finally moves, which is why a longer window is a pricing decision rather than a customer-service one.
Guest checkout, four lanes abroad
We sell US domestic parcel labels through a guest checkout with tracking included, and international labels to Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia with customs handled at checkout. Fulfillment, storefront integrations and returns to other countries are outside what we do, so those need arranging with the carrier or platform directly.
Holiday returns: what sellers ask
Do retailers extend return windows for the holidays?
Some publish it, some do not. Walmart states that most items purchased in-store or online from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31. Target's published window is 90 days for most items with a note that holiday and limited-time collections may have modified policies. Best Buy publishes 15 days for most items and 60 for its paid membership tiers. All three read on 2026-07-28.
What does an extended window cost a small seller?
Postage on every accepted return, at the rate that applies when the label is bought rather than when the sale happened. Small parcels are the common case and they are cheap: on 2026-07-28, Newark to Atlanta quoted $8.48 for a 2 lb mug-sized box, $8.86 for a padded envelope and $9.91 for a 1 lb book, all USPS Ground Advantage.
How long does a return label stay usable?
That is a carrier question, not a policy you can set. Our terms cover the other side of it: unused labels may be eligible for a carrier void or postage refund only where the selected carrier allows it, and those refunds are not certain and can take time to process. Print the label when the buyer is ready to ship rather than months ahead.
Can I buy return labels without an account?
Yes. We sell parcel labels as a guest checkout, tracking included, with no signup and no subscription: US domestic, plus international to Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia with the customs declaration completed at checkout. We do not sell fulfillment or storefront integrations, and a cross-border return outside those four lanes needs a different route.
