Ground never leaves the country. Standard never enters it in the first place — it starts at the border.
What each one is, side by side
UPS publishes these as two entirely separate listings, one on its domestic services page and one on its international services page. Neither page cross-references the other, which is part of why the names blur together.
| Question | UPS Ground | UPS Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Anywhere inside the United States | Cross-border only — UPS lists it among international services; from a US origin, Canada or Mexico |
| What UPS publishes for timing | One to five business days | 2 to 7 business days, day-definite, typically by 10:30 a.m. or noon |
| Saturday delivery | Not part of the base published commitment | Available for most regions, per UPS's own wording |
| Customs paperwork | None — it never crosses a border | A commercial invoice and a duty payer choice, since every shipment now clears customs |
| Weight and size | Up to 150 lbs, 108 in long, 165 in length plus girth | Same UPS package limits, since it is still a parcel product |
Read the two published day ranges together and the products look almost like cousins: both cluster around a week at the outside. What actually separates them is not the arithmetic, it is the border. One can be booked for a package going to Ohio; the other cannot.
Why the confusion starts at checkout
Nobody types the word standard on a UPS label. UPS Ground is what a merchant's platform maps its cheapest US tier to almost every time, because that mapping is set by the store, not by the carrier. UPS Standard shows up nowhere in that mapping, because most stores checking out a US buyer never call UPS's cross-border product at all.
Standard, on a US order
Behind the button is almost always UPS Ground, USPS Ground Advantage, or FedEx Ground — the full merchant-label mapping and a lane-priced example live on our standard shipping guide.
Standard, on a Canadian or Mexican order
This is the one case where the word and the UPS product can actually line up, because UPS Standard is the day-definite ground-style option UPS built specifically for those two borders.
The tell is the address
If the destination never leaves the US, the store's standard button cannot be UPS Standard, no matter what the tracking page calls it later. The country field decides which product is even possible.
What crossing the border actually adds
UPS Standard inherits every customs requirement that any UPS international shipment carries, because it is an international service that happens to move by ground rather than air. UPS's own customs page, read 2026-08-30, is direct about where the bill lands by default.
| Term | What UPS states |
|---|---|
| Delivery Duty Paid | “When the shipper pays duties, taxes or fees, it is called Delivery Duty Paid (DDP)” |
| Delivery Duty Unpaid | “Delivery Duty Unpaid (DDU) means the receiver will need to pay” |
| Default with no UPS account | “If you do not have a UPS payment account and are simply paying with a credit card, the shipment will default to DDU” |
| Every shipment now checked | Effective August 29, 2025, all shipments must clear US Customs and Border Protection and could carry duties, taxes and brokerage fees |
None of that touches a UPS Ground shipment, because Ground stays inside one customs territory the whole trip. That single difference — a border crossing versus none — is worth more to a shipper's decision than the overlapping day counts in the table above.
What UPS Ground actually cost on a real box
A 3 lb box, 14 by 9 by 3 in, holding a wireless keyboard in its retail packaging, quoted through our own checkout on 2026-08-30. This is the domestic service, the one almost every standard shipping button on a US order is really buying.
| Service | Price | Quoted window |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground | $14.13 | 3-4 business days |
SMKlog now sells the Canada lane at checkout, so a Canadian address is no longer out of the question here: cross-border courier rates price live where available, with the customs declaration completed before payment. Mexico remains unsold. The calculator can also confirm exactly what a US-to-US standard tier actually costs on the box you have, rather than the published range alone.

Standard vs Ground, asked plainly
Is UPS Standard the same as UPS Ground?
No. UPS Ground is the domestic US surface service, published at one to five business days. UPS Standard is listed by UPS under international services, not domestic ones, published at 2 to 7 business days, day-definite, typically delivered by 10:30 a.m. or noon; from a US origin it is the cross-border ground option to Canada or Mexico. Both were read on ups.com on 2026-08-30.
If my checkout says standard shipping, does that mean UPS Standard?
Almost never. A store's standard shipping label is the merchant's name for its cheapest tier, and for a US address that is UPS Ground, USPS Ground Advantage, or FedEx Ground, not the UPS Standard product. UPS Standard only becomes possible once the address crosses a border.
Does UPS Standard need a customs form?
Yes, because it crosses a border. UPS states that a shipment paid by credit card without a UPS account defaults to Delivery Duty Unpaid, meaning the recipient is billed for duty and tax, and that UPS may recover unpaid amounts from the shipper if the recipient does not pay. UPS Ground carries none of that, since it never leaves the country.
What does UPS Ground actually cost?
For a 3 lb box, 14 x 9 x 3 in, quoted Berkeley Heights, NJ to Miami, FL on 2026-08-30, UPS Ground came back at $14.13 with a 3-4 business day window. That is the real price behind a checkout button labeled standard shipping to a US address.
Can I buy a UPS Standard label through SMKlog?
Yes, to Canada: SMKlog's checkout now sells UPS Standard on that lane, quoted live at $25.83 for the same 3 lb box captured 2026-08-31, with a 2 business day window. It is not sold to Mexico, which the calculator does not serve. UPS Ground, the domestic service, is priced live for any US address.
