The published range covers the whole country. The quoted range covers your two ZIP codes.
Standards by class, as USPS states them
These are expectations rather than commitments, and USPS says so on the service standards page itself, where it notes that exceptions apply and declines to promise a delivery time. One product is the exception, and it is the expensive one.
| Class | Days USPS publishes | Hour attached | Money back if late |
|---|---|---|---|
| Priority Mail Express | 1 to 3 days | By 6 PM | Yes, refundable on request |
| Priority Mail | 2 to 3 days | None | No |
| Priority Mail Next Day | 1 business day expected | None | No, USPS states the expected date carries no money-back guarantee |
| USPS Ground Advantage | 2 to 5 days | None | No |
| Regular route delivery | Varies by class | Target of 5:00 p.m. local, Monday to Saturday | No |
Two footnotes shape all of these. USPS states that mail sent on a Saturday or the day before a holiday does not count that Sunday or holiday inside the expected time, and Ground Advantage parcels bound for Alaska, Hawaii, offshore destinations, hazardous materials or live animals may receive slower service.
One lane, eight parcels, one window
We ran a range of everyday parcels down the same lane, Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303, and pulled out every USPS Ground Advantage row. The window did not move once. No price here is a postage subtotal, each is the complete charge.
| Parcel | Weight | Price | Window on the rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 by 6 by 3 in box | 8 oz | $8.86 | 8-9 business days |
| 8 by 5 by 1.5 in book | 1 lb | $9.91 | 8-9 business days |
| 6 by 5 by 5 in mug box | 2 lb | $8.48 | 8-9 business days |
| 12 by 10 by 6 in box | 4 lb | $8.48 | 8-9 business days |
| 12 by 10 by 6 in box | 5 lb | $14.02 | 8-9 business days |
| 14 by 12 by 8 in box | 8 lb | $15.73 | 8-9 business days |
| 12 by 12 by 12 in carton | 15 lb | $17.01 | 8-9 business days |
| 16 by 14 by 10 in carton | 16 lb | $22.62 | 8-9 business days |
Eight parcels, eight identical windows, and a price spread of $14.14 between the cheapest and dearest row. The estimate is a property of the lane, not of the box. It also sat well outside the 2 to 5 day figure USPS publishes nationally, which is the honest reason to read the window on your own quote instead of trusting a headline range.
Weekends and holidays sit outside the count
USPS excludes the Sunday or holiday from the expected time when a piece is sent on a Saturday or the day before one. Plan a Friday drop-off as though the clock starts Monday and nothing will surprise you.
The 5 PM target is about routes, not parcels
That figure describes when carriers aim to finish the day, so it covers letters, flats and parcels alike. It is not a per-item commitment and USPS does not refund against it.
A wide window is not the same as a late parcel
Estimates lean conservative so that a normal delivery beats them. Plenty of our 8 to 9 day quotes describe lanes that regularly run faster, which is why the tracking scans matter more than the forecast once the box is moving.
USPS delivery standard questions
How long does USPS mail take to arrive?
By class, per usps.com checked 2026-07-28: Priority Mail Express 1 to 3 days, Priority Mail 2 to 3 days, and USPS Ground Advantage 2 to 5 days. USPS states on its service standards page that exceptions apply and delivery time is not promised.
Does the weight of a parcel change the USPS transit time?
It did not on the lane we tested. All eight USPS Ground Advantage rows we captured from Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-28 returned an 8 to 9 business day window, from an 8 oz box at $8.86 up to a 16 lb carton at $22.62.
Do weekends count in the USPS delivery estimate?
Not always. USPS states that if you send mail on a Saturday or the day before a holiday, the Sunday or holiday is not included in the expected delivery time. Sending late in the week effectively starts the count on the next working day.
Why did a quote say 8 to 9 days when USPS advertises 2 to 5?
The 2 to 5 figure describes the network nationally, while the window on a rate is a per-lane forecast for one origin and destination on one day. When they disagree, plan around the lane forecast, because it knows where the parcel is actually going.
