USPS publishes a target for the end of the route and a date range for the parcel. The calculator shows you the range before you pay.
What the Postal Service actually publishes about the clock
There is one sentence in the USPS help pages that answers this question better than any blog does, and it sets a finish line rather than an appointment. Everything else about time of day is a range, an exception, or a paid upgrade.
| Product or situation | What USPS states about the hour | Where it says so |
|---|---|---|
| Regular route mail and packages | "All deliveries should be made by 5:00 p.m. local time Monday through Saturday" | faq.usps.com, Delayed mail and packages |
| Volume on a heavy day | USPS states that mail volume fluctuates daily and that delivery times therefore carry no promise | faq.usps.com, Delayed mail and packages |
| A day with nothing for you | "It is normal for an address to not have any mail slated for delivery on a given day, or to have mail delivery times fluctuate daily" | faq.usps.com, No mail delivery |
| Priority Mail Express | 1 to 3 day delivery by 6 PM, sold with a money-back guarantee | usps.com/ship/priority-mail-express.htm |
| Express on a Sunday or holiday | Offered in many major markets for an extra charge | usps.com/ship/priority-mail-express.htm |
| Priority Mail | 2 to 3 days, with no hour attached | usps.com/ship/priority-mail.htm |
| USPS Ground Advantage | 2 to 5 days, with no hour attached | usps.com/ship/ground-advantage.htm |
Read the top row carefully. It is an internal target for finishing routes, not a promise to your mailbox, and the row underneath it is the Postal Service saying so in its own words. The only hour USPS sells is the 6 PM on Priority Mail Express.
What a live quote says about timing on a real lane
We priced a 12 by 10 by 6 in box at 5 lb from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 and kept every row the carriers returned. Not one of them carried a clock time. Each price below is the full amount our checkout would have collected, SMKlog cut included.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Timing the rate carried |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $14.02 | 8-9 business days, estimated August 6 |
| UPS | Ground | $14.05 | 2-3 business days, estimated July 31 |
| UPS | Ground Saver | $13.52 | No delivery window came back on this row |
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $14.31 | 6-7 business days, estimated July 31 |
| UPS | 2nd Day Air | $21.96 | 2-3 business days, estimated July 31 |
Five rates, five date ranges, zero hours. That gap between what buyers ask and what the network sells is the whole reason this page exists. If you need an hour on a domestic parcel, Priority Mail Express is the product that has one, and the tracking page is where the day gets narrowed once the box is moving.
Why Express has an hour and Ground Advantage does not
Priority Mail Express is priced as a commitment product, so USPS attaches 6 PM to it and refunds the postage when it misses. Ground Advantage is priced as a network product, so USPS publishes a 2 to 5 day expectation and stops there. You are paying for the promise, not the truck.
Your street sits somewhere on a route
A letter carrier works one loop in one order, and where your address falls on that loop is why your neighbour two blocks over gets mail at eleven while you wait until four. Route order shifts with staffing, volume and vehicle changes, which is why no address gets a published time.
When lateness becomes worth reporting
USPS suggests getting in touch after two consecutive days with no delivery, or after regular service on a given weekday has gone missing for two weeks or more. Before that, an empty mailbox is inside normal. Check the tracking scan first, since a package sitting at a facility tells a different story from one out for delivery.
USPS delivery hours, answered
How late can USPS deliver?
USPS states that all deliveries should be made by 5:00 p.m. local time Monday through Saturday, per faq.usps.com checked 2026-07-28. That is a target for finishing routes rather than a promise, and the same page says mail volume fluctuates daily so delivery times are not fixed. Carriers running long on a heavy day can and do arrive after that hour.
Does USPS publish a delivery time for my address?
No. USPS gives an expected number of days per product, never an hour per street. A carrier works one route in one order, and staffing, volume and vehicle changes move where your stop lands on that loop from day to day.
Which USPS product actually promises a time of day?
Priority Mail Express, described by usps.com as 1 to 3 day delivery by 6 PM with a money-back guarantee. Sunday and holiday delivery is offered in many major markets for an extra charge. Priority Mail and Ground Advantage carry day ranges only, with no hour attached.
Do live shipping quotes show a delivery time?
They show a date range, not a clock. On our 2026-07-28 quotes for a 12 by 10 by 6 in box at 5 lb from Newark to Atlanta, the five rates returned windows from 2-3 business days up to 8-9, and one row came back with no window at all. Tracking narrows the day once the parcel is scanned.
