A FedEx tracking number can belong to any of five different operations, and only two of them ever hand a box to a person off the street.
The businesses behind the name
Federal Express Corporation's own description of its services, on investors.fedex.com and read 2026-08-31, opens with its oldest business: “Federal Express Corporation invented express transportation and remains the industry's global leader, providing rapid, reliable, time-definite delivery to more than 220 countries and territories.” The same page folds ground and residential delivery into that same operating company rather than describing them as a separate one, which is a change from the FedEx Ground most shippers grew up thinking of as its own business.
| Business | What it carries | Booked by |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Express Corp | Express and ground parcels door to door, plus residential delivery through FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx Ground Economy service | Anyone, online or by account |
| FedEx Freight | Less-than-truckload freight on pallets, described on its own about page as one of the largest LTL networks in the country | Shippers, by quote |
| FedEx Custom Critical | Time-critical freight, described by FedEx Freight's own history page as part of the suite it now offers rather than a separate public brand | Shippers, by quote |
| FedEx Office | Retail copying, printing, signage and pack-and-ship counters | Walk-in customers |
| FedEx Logistics | Air and ocean cargo, customs brokerage and trade management for businesses | Businesses, by contract |
A sixth name, FedEx Dataworks, shows up in the same investor materials. It builds the data tools the rest of the network runs on and does not carry a shipment for a customer, so it is left off the table above.
The freight side: FedEx Freight and Custom Critical
FedEx Freight
fedexfreight.com's own about page, read 2026-08-31, traces the network back to the 1998 acquisition of Viking Freight, then American Freightways and Watkins Motor Lines, each one adding LTL coverage until the combined network reached the whole country. This is pallet freight, quoted lane by lane, not a per-parcel checkout price.
FedEx Custom Critical
The same fedexfreight.com history page traces Custom Critical to the Roberts Express acquisition, which it says “evolved into FedEx Custom Critical, paving the way for the suite of service offerings FedEx Freight is known for.” Today that reads as one line in FedEx Freight's own history rather than a separately marketed brand, and time-critical freight through it is quoted directly with FedEx rather than picked from an online rate table.
Neither FedEx Freight nor Custom Critical has a self-serve online price for a single pallet the way a parcel checkout does. SMKlog sells parcel labels only and does not arrange pallet or freight shipments.
The two businesses most shippers never book directly
FedEx Office
FedEx's own investor description of the division, read 2026-08-31, lists what the counter actually sells: “copying, digital printing, professional finishing, signs, computer rental, corporate print solutions, packing services, shipping services from Federal Express, and Hold at FedEx Location.” Shipping is one line among several print and pack services, not the counter's main business.
FedEx Logistics
The same investor page describes it as a “comprehensive suite of integrated logistics solutions, providing air and ocean cargo transportation, specialty transportation, customs brokerage, and trade management tools and data, as well as third party logistics and supply chain solutions.” This is a business-to-business booking, priced by a logistics contract rather than a checkout for one box.
Most people who have heard the FedEx Office name have picked up a printed document or dropped off an already-labeled return, not booked freight or cargo through Logistics. SMKlog sells parcel labels only.
What this means for a box you're about to send
If the box weighs under about 150 lb and fits in a car, it is almost certainly a Federal Express Corp product: Ground, Ground Economy, Home Delivery or an Express tier, all bookable online and all priced side by side with USPS and UPS in SMKlog's own checkout. If it is a pallet, FedEx Freight prices it by quote rather than by a per-box rate. FedEx Office, Custom Critical and Logistics matter only for print counters, exclusive-use freight and business cargo, which most one-box shippers never touch.
Where these facts come from
- Federal Express Corporation, Overview of Services — the descriptions of Federal Express Corp, FedEx Logistics, FedEx Office and FedEx Dataworks. Read 2026-08-31.
- FedEx Freight, About FedEx Freight — the LTL description and the acquisition history that traces FedEx Custom Critical back to Roberts Express. Read 2026-08-31.
FedEx Custom Critical's own dedicated pages (customcritical.fedex.com and fedex.com/en-us/custom-critical.html) returned a server error on every attempt on 2026-08-31, so this page describes Custom Critical only as far as FedEx Freight's own history page does, not from Custom Critical's own service pages. FedEx revises its corporate pages on its own schedule; treat the descriptions above as what those two pages published on the date shown.
FedEx's businesses, asked plainly
What does FedEx deliver?
Five different kinds of freight under one brand. Federal Express Corp carries express and ground parcels door to door, including FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx Ground Economy service. FedEx Freight carries less-than-truckload freight on pallets. FedEx Office runs retail print and pack-and-ship counters. FedEx Logistics books air and ocean cargo and handles customs brokerage for businesses. FedEx Dataworks builds internal data tools and does not move a shipment at all. A person mailing one box almost always means the first one.
Is FedEx Ground the same company as FedEx Express?
On paper, yes, today. Federal Express Corporation's own investor page, read 2026-08-31, describes the express network and residential ground delivery through FedEx Home Delivery and Ground Economy as services of the same operating company, not two separate ones. For a shipper the distinction that still matters is the product picked at checkout — Ground, Home Delivery, Ground Economy or an Express tier — since each carries its own weight limit and timing, whichever entity now runs the trucks.
What does FedEx Freight carry, and is that the same as FedEx Custom Critical?
FedEx Freight moves less-than-truckload freight, pallets that take up part of a trailer rather than a whole one. Its own history page, read 2026-08-31, traces FedEx Custom Critical back to the Roberts Express acquisition and describes Custom Critical today as part of “the suite of service offerings FedEx Freight is known for” rather than a separate public-facing company. Neither is booked through an online parcel checkout; both are quoted directly with FedEx.
What does FedEx Office do that is not shipping?
Printing, mostly. FedEx's own investor description of the division, read 2026-08-31, lists copying, digital printing, professional finishing, signs, computer rental and corporate print solutions alongside packing services and shipping from Federal Express. The counter sells print and pack services first; the shipping label is one more thing it can hand you on the way out.
Can I buy a FedEx label through SMKlog?
Yes, for the domestic parcel side. SMKlog's checkout prices FedEx Ground, FedEx Ground Economy and other domestic FedEx services alongside USPS and UPS for boxes moving inside the United States. Freight, Custom Critical, Office counter work and Logistics cargo bookings are not parcel products and are not priced through this checkout.
